20 Oct Knights MPR Responds to IMO’s Delay of Global Net-Zero Framework Vote
A call for leadership and credibility amid uncertainty
Knights MPR expresses concern over the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO)decision to delay adoption of its Net-Zero Framework (NZF), including a proposed global carbon levy on shipping, by another year.
While the delay stems from complex political negotiations, the implications go well beyond shipping. According to Knights MPR, the decision raises pressing questions about global regulatory credibility, climate governance, and investor confidence across all sectors.
“This decision sends an uncomfortable signal to markets and industries that international climate commitments can still be deferred when the pressure mounts,” said a Knights MPR spokesperson.
“For sectors like energy, logistics, infrastructure, and finance, the real risk now lies in perception — the belief that global frameworks are negotiable. Business leaders must communicate clearly that delay does not equal denial, and that credible progress will continue regardless of shifting policy timelines.”
Knights MPR warns that the deferral could encourage fragmented regional approaches to carbon pricing, adding complexity and compliance costs for global industries. However, the agency also highlights that the current moment offers a narrative opportunity for organisations to demonstrate proactive leadership and reinforce their own commitments to decarbonisation.
“The brands and businesses that continue to act decisively, even in regulatory uncertainty, will own the credibility space,” the spokesperson added. “Now is the time to lead through action, not commentary.”
Knights MPR will continue monitoring developments and supporting clients in crafting communications that convey confidence, transparency, and responsibility amid a shifting global regulatory landscape.
